Donald Slayton didn’t just break the rules of spaceflight. He broke them, waited twenty years, and then broke them again in orbit. Born in Sparta, Wisconsin, in 1924, Slayton was one of the original seven Mercury astronauts selected in 1959. He was supposed to be one of the first Americans to float in space. Instead, he spent two decades on the ground, watching others go up, before finally flying in 1975.
His path to the stars was anything but straight. Slayton joined the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He flew fifty-six combat missions during World War II. It was hard service. After the war, he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Minnesota. He worked as an engineer for Boeing. Then, in 1951, he was recalled to active duty with the Minnesota Air National Guard. By 1955, he was a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
Then came the blow. The Mercury program wanted him. But doctors found an irregular heartbeat.
He was grounded.
It sounds like the end of a dream. For most men, it would have been. Slayton didn’t quit. He became the director of flight crew operations at the Johnson Space Center. He trained the astronauts. He picked the crews for nearly every Gemini and Apollo mission. He was the man deciding who got to fly while he stayed behind.
The man who couldn’t fly became the man who decided who could.
Why did his heart change? Doctors never really explained it. The irregularity just vanished. By 1975, Slayton was fifty-one years old. The heartbeat was normal. NASA looked at him. They looked at the Apollo-Soyuz mission. It was a joint effort between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. A symbol of peace. And Slayton was named the docking module pilot.
The mission ran from July 15 to July 24, 1975. He flew with Thomas P. Stafford and Vance D. Brand. He was in space. He was older than the other Mercury Seven had been when they flew. He was the oldest American in space at that time. But he didn’t care about the record. He cared about the handshake in orbit with the Soviet cosmonauts.
After that flight, Slayton didn’t retire. He stayed on as manager of the orbital flight tests for the space shuttle program. He helped shape the next era of American spaceflight. He finally retired in 1982.
But he didn’t stop working. He founded Space Services, Inc. It was a pioneering company. They launched small satellites. They took the vision of the Mercury era and applied it to a new, smaller world.
Slayton died in League City, Texas, in 1993. He lived a life that defied the timeline. He waited. He watched. He trained. He flew. And then he built the infrastructure for those who would come after him.
