Thomas Milton Rivers never injected a single patient with the polio vaccine. He didn’t grow the virus in the lab for Salk or Sabin. But without his organizational framework, the race to cure polio likely would have stalled in the 1930s. Born in Jonesboro, Georgia, in 1888, and died in New York in 1962, Rivers was the American virologist who understood that fighting a microscopic enemy required more than just a lucky guess.
