John Desmond Bernal died in London on September 15, 1971. But before he left the stage, he had already reshaped how we look at the building blocks of life. Born in Nenagh, County Tipperary, on May 10, 1901, Bernal was a physicist who didn’t just study atoms. He figured out how to see them clearly.

The Cambridge Breakthrough

The D-Day landings were a logistical nightmare. Bernal’s engineering insights helped solve parts of that puzzle. It shows a side of Bernal often overlooked: the applied scientist. Science and Social Responsibility

Bernal was not a quiet academic. He was a lifelong political activist. In the 1920s and ’30s, he was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. This wasn’t a passing phase. It shaped his entire worldview.
